Rarely do individuals shape a sport’s future and improve the experience for so many as Jacqui and Greg Forsythe have done for Swimming Wellington. After 25 years of tireless service, they have closed a remarkable chapter in the region’s swimming history. Last weekend marked their final swim meets as officials, and Swimming Wellington honoured them both with Life Memberships in recognition of their outstanding contributions.

Their leadership, dedication, and ongoing commitment have continually raised the standard of competitive swimming across Wellington and New Zealand. This post celebrates their journey, achievements, and the lasting impact they leave behind.

A Partnership Built on Passion and Service

Jacqui and Greg have been members of multiple Wellington clubs since the late 1990s, including TSW, Capital, Karori, and SwimZone. Their involvement began as club members but quickly grew into vital roles such as committee members, club treasurers, officials’ coordinators, and race secretaries. Their commitment to the sport extended beyond the pool deck into the administrative and organizational heart of club swimming.

Starting as regional timekeepers in 2000, they expanded their qualifications over the years. Both became national timekeepers, inspectors of turns, judges of stroke, starters, and referees. Their broad expertise allowed them to serve in every official capacity at swim meets throughout the Swimming Wellington region.

Contributions at Regional and National Levels

Since 2005, Jacqui and Greg have officiated at Swimming New Zealand (SNZ) meets, including Junior Festival events, Secondary Schools Championships, Division II, National Age Groups, NZ Short Course, and NZ Open Championships. They have also served as technical directors at major SNZ meets, Jacqui took on this role at the Junior Festival, while Greg served at the National Age Groups.

Their involvement in open water swimming is equally impressive. Both have officiated at the SNZ Open Water Championships since 2011. Greg has taken on leadership roles such as Chief Referee and Meet Director, ensuring the smooth running of these challenging events. Jacqui was the Starter at the 2019 Pacific Games Open Water Championships, a prestigious role on an international stage.

Both are listed as Starter and Referee on the FINA list and have both travelled to numerous international events including World Championships.

Leadership Beyond Officiating

Jacqui and Greg’s dedication extends to mentoring and assessing new officials. Since 2024, both have served as SNZ Assessors, helping maintain high standards and supporting the development of future officials. Greg also contributed to the SNZ Technical Committee, influencing policies and procedures that shape the sport nationally.

Their leadership roles within clubs and regional committees have helped build strong foundations for swimming in Wellington. Their experience and knowledge have been invaluable in organizing meets, training officials, and supporting swimmers at all levels.

A Legacy That Inspires

The Forsythes’ journey shows how passion for a sport can translate into decades of meaningful service. Their work behind the scenes has ensured that swimming competitions run fairly, safely, and efficiently. Their presence has inspired many volunteers and officials who follow in their footsteps.

Swimming Wellington congratulates Jacqui and Greg on their Life Memberships and thanks them for their amazing contribution. Their legacy will continue to influence the sport for years to come.
